| Most of Lincoln's letters, speeches and reported comments are masterpieces of clarity and eloquence. He wanted people from all walks of life to be able to understand and enjoy them. By employing simple and easy to understand words and including many familiar quotes from the Bible and other great literary masterpieces, he was able to accomplish that end. | In spite of this clarity, there were groups and individuals who said they could not understand him, especially in politics. When this happened, Abe usually laughed off their complaints with a shrug and a quip. When a gentleman who opposed his political views said. "I can't understand those speeches of Lincoln," Abe replied, "There are always some fleas a dog just can't reach." |
