Jim Tresner, Book Review Editor Richard Swanson, LINCARNATIONS, Number 13 Charles Brame's HONESTLY ABE, a cartoon biography of Abraham Lincoln, can be read and enjoyed at many levels. One can just enjoy the cartoons and only read the brief captions, or, at another level, study the more detailed descriptions that are included. The more serious reader may consult the references at the bottom of each page. Using George Washington as a straight man and Charlie B as a Spin Doctor is clever and works in most cases. HONESTLY ABE will bring many smiles and perhaps a few tears as sad events are presented with a bitter-sweet touch. The art work is well done and the prose sharp. The serious Lincoln scholar will find all the Lincoln stories with which he is familiar and perhaps a few that have escaped him. He may not agree with all of the author's presentations of Lincoln but Charles Brame has used good solid sources...to state his case. Admirably he resisted the trend of some recent Lincoln writers who dig deep into dubious sources such as some of Herndon's unreliable informants making what they will out of Lincoln. HONESTLY ABE is a wonderful resource for a public speaker or a Lincoln Presenter searching for a gem. Charles Brame is to be congratulated on a job well done. His book is unique and belongs on the shelves of Lincoln Literature. Dan Bassuk, Editor (908) 369-7648 Beaufort Gazette, Beaufort, SC Perhaps... one of the most unique books ever written about Abraham Lincoln or any other president. Honestly Abe A Cartoon Biography of Abe Lincoln is a satirical and historical analysis of the man beneath the stove pipe hat by Lincoln impersonator Charles Brame. Combined with the efforts of Edgar Sol Soller, Brame has compiled a political cartoon biography of one of the most prolific writers in history.... What is most refreshing is Brame's treatment of the more interesting accounts of his life. There is certainly nothing new in Honestly Abe for scholars who have read the myriad of words printed about Lincoln. But for those who have never had the patience to wade through a 400-page text about the president to discover interesting anecdotes and stories, this book will be an eye opener. Lincoln's life and exploits are still an education and Honestly Abe is an enjoyable look at Lincoln 101. Todd Hines, Book Editor (803) 986-5527 The Daily Astorian, Astoria, OR. Just in time for the celebration of the independence day of our country, Lincoln impersonator Charles Brame puts his looks aside and pen to work on a unique book written about Abraham Lincoln.
