Lottery & Gambling: Would Honest Abe Approve?

The state of Illinois has been using images of Abraham Lincoln in TV ads to sell lottery tickets. But would “Honest Abe” have approved of gambling, casinos or even playing the lottery?

Owen Youngman thinks not, and makes the point in no uncertain terms in his Chicago Tribune article.

However, I’m not so sure. Lincoln was a revolutionary. He was not afraid of change where he felt it would benefit his party and his country. Whether legalizing gambling would do so is open to debate. But Abe would not be scared to have that debate, and if the facts spoke in favour of it, then gambling laws would go ahead with his blessing.
